🔻 { Connecting to Communicate } 🔻 [ ENG students edition ] conversation with ENG 101 student | Monica | shows how I listened while reading my students' written responses to the writing prompts. When assigning the students to write their rhetorical analyses, I instructed them to not select popular speeches such as MLK Jr. or JFK. The main reason why I tell students to stay away from analyzing popular speeches is to prevent any chance of plagiarism. Additionally, I wanted to learn from my students by reading their papers...and I have read more than enough essays on MLK Jr. However when I read Monica's written response about why she wanted to analyze MLK Jr.'s speech, I decided to make an exception. In her words, Monica brought up thought-provoking questions while expressing her passion for wanting to know more about the circumstances that motivated MLK Jr to give the speech. I was curious about how her analysis would turn out. Monica did me proud by delivering a strongly written rhetorical analysis on MLK Jr. Then I asked what she thought about the class and the writing prompts overall. I already miss having Monica in my class, writing in response to the prompts...... Thursday, 6 December 2018.
